Every website on the Internet has a domain name. A domain name is the name of the website, and every domain name is unique. A domain can only be registered by one person or company, and once it has been registered it cannot be registered by another person or company. A domain name is similar in that instance to a company name registered with Companies House.
Domain names do have different TLDs (Top Level Domains) however, and the same domain can be registered with different TLDs. For example, just because a business owns the .com of their domain name, it does not mean that someone else couldnt register the .co.uk. Therefore, if your company name exists with both the .com and the .co.uk variants, you would be advised to register them both just to be safe.
When you register a domain name you are merely renting it for a period of 12 months or more. The minimum rental period on most domain names is 12 months, but on .co.uk domains it is 2 years.
Once you have registered your domain name you are then able to create email addresses for that domain. Having your own email address at your website address looks very professional; more so than using a hotmail address or other similar free hosted email service.
